Progressive Era The presidential election of 1912 was one that was a heated contest and showed the impact of a third party has in affecting the outcome of it. The candidate for the Republican Party was the President, William H. Taft, who was seeking re-election for his second term. The Republican party was split between the progressives and the conservatives heading in their heading convention and the party split into two separate parties when Taft was selected over Former President Theodore Roosevelt, who had tapped Taft, who was Secretary of War under Roosevelt, to become his successor in 1908 but had angry over by the Taft administration and that led to him running for President in 1912. The parties split after the convention creating the Progressive Party, also called the Bull Moose Party, nominated Roosevelt to running. The Democratic Party nominated Woodrow Wilson who was the Governor of New Jersey at the time. The other parties in the race were the Socialist Party, who nominated Eugene V. Debs, and the Prohibition Party who nominated Eugene W. Chafin, but had they had
