Ulysses S. Grant was elected our eighteenth President in 1868. Grant became President at a time when the country was still reeling from the Civil War and this was the first postwar presidential contest. There were many important issues that faced the newly elected president and Grant had to deal with them with no political experience. One of the issues that Grant had to face was African American relationships and their rights. At his inaugural address Grant expressed his desire to pass the Fifteenth Amendment, which allowed citizens to vote regardless of race or previous servitude and the amendment was passed by the Republicans in congress and fiercely opposed by Democrats, which show the division in the country on civil and human rights. With the passage of the Fifteenth Amendment, it showed Grant’s determination to fight for civil rights for African-Americans and he demonstrated that even more with the Ku Klux Klan
