Hemami 220 Lec 1 - 1 Welcome to ECE 220 Signals & Information: Multimedia Signal Processing ECE 220 Fall 2006 Prof. Hemami August 24, 2006 Hemami 220 Lec 1 - 2 Today’s Lecture Define multimedia, signal processing (SP), and multimedia signal processing (MM-SP). Important concept: the human as a receiver. A motivating example of MM-SP: lossy image compression. Implications & demonstrations of the human as a receiver. Hemami 220 Lec 1 - 3 What is multimedia signal processing? Multimedia — an adjective to refer to source content in the form of speech, audio, images, and video. (See handout for other definitions.) Signal processing — manipulation or processing of an information representation (a signal ) to achieve some end goal. Analysis Understanding Efficient transmission Enhancement Prediction Hemami 220 Lec 1 - 4 What is multimedia signal processing? In ECE 220, MM-SP refers to SP techniques for speech, audio, images, and video. Speech & audio are 1-D and exist in time . The concept of the direction of time is important (we can’t process data which doesn’t exist yet). Images are 2-D and exist in space. Generally there is not a “direction” to space, and we often have the entire signal available for processing. Video (or moving pictures) is 3-D and exists in space and time.
