SOCI 108 Introduction to Sociology Module 6 Exam 1. Jonathan Haidt suggests that religion has a particular impact on individuals. Identify what he says this impact is, and then comment on the extent to which you agree with him. Jonathan Haidt suggest that religion makes individuals transcendent. I quite agree with him because religion is man’s search for a higher being, it is belief in a supernatural being which leads to worship of that higher power. Religion causes you to seek a higher power, gives you a belief of supernatural existence. Most religion involve sessions of worship of that higher being and in those moment of intense worship, worshippers lose themselves into a state of ecstasy in awe of the worshipped being or object. During worship, there is kind of a total surrender of one's will which gives rise to an intense concentration – and in that moment, sometimes individuals loses themselves. Coupled with the above reason is also the fact that religion is an association of group of two or more persons, and in groups, self-interest is replaced by group interest.
