Discussion Question 2
What roles do firewalls and proxy servers play in network security? What is the importance of
maintaining security on a LAN? Give examples to support your answer.
A proxy server has two purposes; to keep machines behind it anonymous (mainly for security)
and to speed up access to a resource (via caching). It is commonly used to cache web pages from
a web server. The proxy server deters unwanted individuals from looking into the network. A
firewall is a part of a computer system or network that is designed to block unauthorized access
while permitting outward communication. Both the proxy server and the firewall help block
unauthorized access. Maintaining security on a LAN will keep the network running the way it
was indented, keep unauthorized access to a minimum and help catch those that feel the need to
test the system security protocols. The information on any LAN needs to be safe and accurate.
