8 th Fire – Whose Land Is It Anyway? 1. What are some of the businesses implemented by the Ossoyus First Nation? What benefits do these businesses have for the community? Ossoyus First Nation developed golf course, vineyard, and a five star hotel resorts on the on the land. This helped them in generating employment opportunities with decent paying jobs in the first nation communities. 2. How has loss of land impacted First Nation communities? The loss of land created poverty situations in the First Nation communities. Further, their was no rules sanctioned by government that dealt with indigenous people land claims. 3. What is the James Bay agreement? Why is it significant? James Bay agreement was the first Canadian contract that covered that economic development in the region of Quebec. For this reason, government used the land to build hydroelectric dams in the James Bay region. The Cree and Inuit communities gave up their ancestral lands for construction of these dams.
