Andrew Stolzenberg Poly(methyl methacrylate), commonly referred to as PMMA, is a clear plastic that is a member of a family of polymers, which chemists call acrylates(2). The molecular formula of Poly(methyl methacrylate) is C 5 H 8 O 2. Outstanding properties include weatherability and scratch resistance. The most serious deficiencies are low impact strength and poor chemical resistance(1). The glass transition temperature is 65 degrees Celsius and the melting temperature is 200 degrees Celsius(O’Driscoll,72). Poly(methyl methacrylate) has a variety of different uses. PMMA is used as a shatterproof replacement for glass. The clear barrier at the ice rink which keeps hockey pucks from flying in the faces of hockey fans is made of PMMA. The chemical company Rohm and Haas makes windows out of it and calls it Plexiglas. Ineos Acrylics also makes it and calls it Lucite. When glass windows are made too thick, they become difficult to see through. However, PMMA windows can be made as much as 13 inches thick, and still be perfectly transparent. This makes PMMA a good material for making large aquariums(1). For over 30 years PMMA has been used in orthopeadic surgery to fix prosthetic components. PMMA is also used as a bone graft template and as a femoral window plug in total hip replacement(3).
