Sean Trank 373150 COM350 Midterm Spring 2008 2. Discuss the characteristics of radio broadcasting in its early years, during post-World War II, and in recent decades. What are the primary distinctions between each of those eras? What events and issues most differentiate the time periods of this medium? Nov 2 1920, KDKA broadcasted the election race bringing about the first network which would bring about the mad rush of radio stations and networks. Early idealism of radio came about by a man named Davis, who wanted to make a hug profit by selling radio receivers to the masses. Because there was no competition, this was a brilliant idea. “Frank, my idea is that you stop sending from your station and we will start a regular service from our experimental station here at East Pittsburgh. We can arrange for a suitable wave length, and I believe if we do this it will be the beginning of radio broadcasting public service which seems to me to have wonderful possibilities.”-Davis Davis envisioned radio as a mass medium designed for the information, entertainment, and public service of the masses. The problem Davis saw was in the rapid growth of early radio. In 1922 there were almost 600 stations on only two wave lengths. Davis made plans to create a distribution system called “universal speaking service” also known as network broadcasting. In January of 1923, the American Telephone and Telegraph Company began experiments that would link radio stations across the country, creating the first radio network.
