PLS 105 4. The definition of bureaucracy is a concept in sociology and political science referring to the way that the administrative execution and enforcement of legal rules are socially organized. It is often thought that bureaucracy determines the meaning of justice. This is a true statement judging by the themes being portrayed throughout American history. A solid example to me involves the Jim Crow Laws, which were state and local laws enacted in the Southern and border states of the United States and enforced between 1876 and 1965. The Jim Crow Laws mandated “separate but equal” where African Americans and the white population were separated, but were supposed to have equal buildings and resources. This was not the case; African Americans had poor buildings and resources and were denied the same opportunities as the white population. At the time enforcement of this as a law was fair and necessary to the voting public. Now as we look back at those laws and our history, we believe these laws were unfair and violated rights.
