College Writing I Television in Society Nowadays, it is difficult to believe how the television started out. Not long ago the television was a monstrous, wooden box with a five-inch, blurry, black and white screen. Today, consumers have the option of a flat screen, wall panel, high-definition, and plasma versus LCD (liquid crystal display) television. So the television has come a long way in the past century. But what makes an invention like this so noteworthy? Regardless of all the latest technological advances, television is simply a source of receiving information and entertainment. Despite what most people believe, the television was already on its way before the Great Depression, but as far as an actual television set, the 1920s is when advances on the television really began. The “first generation” television was actually not even electronic. The television screen had a small motor with a spinning disc and a neon lamp, which worked together giving a blurry, red-orange picture about half the size of a business card.
