Research Oxidation is a chemical result when something loses electrons, negative particles that move around a nucleus. A common example of oxidation is rust. Reduction is the opposite of oxidation. It is when something gains electrons. Rust is a brownish red material that forms over iron or steel when it is exposed to moist air. Rust is formed when oxygen, damp air, and iron join together by oxidation. Rust can be dissolved by acids, but when rust is near an acid, rusting is speeded up. Rust corrodes the surface, and weakens the metal. To corrode means to eat away. Corrosion usually progresses faster in seawater than in fresh water because seawater has more salt ions. Salt water quickly rusts most metals such as steel or iron. The corrosion of aluminum is different from steel or iron because it forms an unseen layer of compounds that is called aluminum oxide. Aluminum oxide forms a protective coating that resists corrosion. This process is called passivation, and it also works for other metals such as stainless steels. Stainless steels are alloys.
