Breanna Kinneman Common Good Oscar Wilde wrote, “We in our madness have separated the two [body and soul] and have invented a realism that is vulgar, and an ideality that is void” from his book, The Picture of Dorian Gray, in 1890. In this quote Wilde is demonstrating the objective of Victorian literature by discovering a superior morality by the doing of secular people. Wilde, along with other Victorian writers such as John Stuart Mill and Charles Darwin, explored the common good in the Victorian era through examining the people and social problems of their time, like through Mill’s Utilitarianism essay and Darwin’s theory of evolution; where these writers explore the common good of the Victorian era with the foundations of fairy tale morality, through the conscience of the country, by displaying human suffering, and through illness that leads to redemption.
