06/11/2006 08:58:00 Gottfredson and Hirschi: Self Control (The Ability to Resist Crime) Main agent of control in SOCIAL control is other people Self control theory’s agent is the person him/herself o Looks within person to determine person’s capacity to keep himself  from engaging in deviant behavior o Presents certain image of criminal Hirschi did self and social control  Said crime is easy and gets instant gratification Has exciting, risky, thrilling activities No concern or ability to plan for long term Minimal toleration for frustration or conflict  Less than 1/3 of burglaries have forced entry o Requires effort o Burglars wants easy targets that require little effort o Usually only cash is taken because immediate gratification o Small items that can be easily pawned o Can’t make a career as burglar o May only yield a little bit of $ and can’t live off of that long
