Barnes 1 Dylan Barnes Mrs. Whiting English 12 8 Jan. 2021 Marine Pollution Over the past century, all kinds of pollution have gotten worse and worse. These pollutants have an effect all over the world, from the oceans to the air and the land. Some care about it while others turn a blind eye to it. Marine pollution is one of the worst because of how many pollutants can be in the ocean rather than on land. Oil spills, garbage, plastic, carbon dioxide, and chemicals. I myself went to California near Seal Beach and discovered that 5 species of fish were considered contaminated and could not be eaten. Why? Because a company had been dumping chemicals into the water. There should be more of an effort to help solve these problems or at least slow the pollution down. The U.S. does a pretty good job at maintaining the ocean's health but China and Indonesia don’t. We need to find a way to prevent coral bleaching from personal care products, look for safer ways for transporting oil along with preventing disasters on oil rigs, lower our carbon dioxide emissions, and stop the process of plastic waste being thrown into the ocean. Many different healthcare products have a negative effect on coral and other ocean life. Corals experience coral bleaching when exposed to certain chemicals found in sunscreen: “Recently, it has been demonstrated that personal care products, including sunscreens, have an impact on aquatic organisms similar to that of other contaminants.” (Danovaro) This quote was taken from a group that had experimented with sunscreen and coral. The report also mentions that it has an effect on other marine life which can be seen here: “Environmentally, oxybenzone
Barnes 2 has been shown to produce a variety of toxic reactions in coral and fish ranging from reef bleaching to mortality.” Luckily there are sunscreens that are environmentally friendly but there are many other products that may contain harmful chemicals such as lip balm, hair conditioner, fragrances, and moisturizer. Although certain brands do not have harmful chemicals. One of the most well-known pollutants in the ocean is oil. Oil has a wide range of different effects in the surrounding area where the oil is spilled. Starting off with marine life, oil spills have an effect on most marine life in the area. Some have a short toxic reaction with the oil but turn out to be okay after that while other species have permanent impacts to their health in a negative way: “Both oils caused similar cardiotoxicity and photo-induced toxicity to zebrafish embryos.” (Farrington) Oil has the worst effects on mammals, birds, and marine organisms that roam on the seafloor. Some organisms that roam the seafloor would be ok but they may get smothered to death by the oil. One organism that experiences a huge negative impact is lobster:
