Friedman Capitalism and Freedom What is the difference between the liberal and the egalitarian? Liberal: will distinguish between equality of rights and equality of opportunity AND material equality and equality of outcome; believes in equality of rights and equality of opportunity (argues against the egalitarian view) Egalitarian: Believes in material equality and equality of outcome; will defend taking from some to give to others on the grounds of justice What are the points of the Robinson Crusoes and finding the $20 bill examples? 1. We should not be coerced by others to share our good fortune nor are we entitled to use force to extract what we regard as our due from others 2. Most differences of status or position or wealth can be regarded as the product of chance at a far enough remove (p 666) 3. We are generally much readier to accept inequalities arising from chance than those attributable to merit (Review what Friedman says about social responsibility and business – pp 667-668) Rawls Rawls is trying to come up with principles of distributive justice that do not rely on tradition (which can be oppressive and unjust) or utilitarian arguments (which can also be unjust) Rawls’ method: we are to imagine ourselves in what Rawls calls the original position: we are all self-interested, rational persons who stand behind what Rawls calls the veil of ignorance
