History 114 B 13 December 2011 Essay Following the tragedies of the Great Depression and World War II, Americans were more than ready for peacetime prosperity, and they got it. The driving factor behind this post-war prosperity was a dramatic increase in American consumerism. Though the post-war prosperity is now recognized as having had many flaws such as high poverty levels and expanding materialism, at the time, most Americans were fed up with hardships and ready to splurge. A variety of factors fueled the rising consumption in the U.S., which lead to the high prosperity of the time. During the war, many factories produced military goods to aid the fight, causing Americans to have to put off purchasing inessential goods. Upon the conclusion of the war, however, businesses began once again producing consumer goods, driving the third industrial system. These businesses benefited from improved technologies, increasing worker productivity and overall output. Not only did the American economy benefit from new technology, but the country also benefited from other nations’ tragedies. The war left
