The word "feudalism" was derived from the Latin words feudalis and feodum , the former meaning free and the latter meaning fief (the land given in exchange for services & protection) The Feudal system had origins in the Roman manorial system , where workers were given protection while working on large estates. By the 8 century AD, the Frankish kings gave out land to nobles in exchange for loyalty and military service.
