Andrei Guth English 101 Mr. Johnson 29 December 2007 Baroque vs Rococo Art Throughout history, several different art movements have come and gone. Whether it is abstract expressionism or surrealism, artists always have a consistent desire to evolve and create something new. Two of these art movements are called the Baroque and Rococo periods. Yet unlike some of the more distinct movements, these two periods often flow together and coalesce, blurring the distinctions between them. What is the difference between the two, and furthermore, how do they affect the world today? Before one can distinguish the two movements, one must have a general understanding of them. Baroque art spanned across the 17 th and 18 th centuries. (Information Please) It consisted of two different styles, one of which focused on the contrast between light and dark, and the other of which focused on classicism, which is “the principles and ideals of beauty that are characteristic of Greek and Roman art, architecture, and literature.” (Fact Monster/ Information Please) These two concepts are glued together under one premise: an emphasis
