Health Issues in the Black Community Wednesday, February 20, 2008 1:46 AM Chapter 4: Health Status of Black Men o Introduction During the 1970's African American men were an "endangered species"-- we still are. Multitude of heath, sociopolitical, and psychological issues were faced by them. Number and percentage of Black men in prison is greater than any other race. 6-7% of the population is Black; so are more than 60% of the 2 million in jail Imprisoned 7 times the rate of Whites 33% of Black men between 20 and 29 are in jail, on probation or on parole Black men have the shortest life expectancy of approximately 67.6 years versus the White male at 74.5, Black woman at 74.8, and White woman at 80. Black men have highest mortality rate in every age group Accidents are the leading cause of death for Black males of ages 5-14 years Homicide is the leading cause of death for Black male of ages 15- 24 years o Healthcare Utilization Among African American Men Stoicism is believed to be the a reason behind the disconnection between Black men and health care; it is the indifference to pleasure or pain Study showed that African American men hose to focus on more immediate needs or concerns when confronted with illness or injury A theory concerning masculinity is discussed, stating that stoic attitudes may
