Calculation of Theoretical Yield Researcher started with 3.965g of CoCl2 x 6 H20 Multiplying this by 1 mol CoCl2 x 6 H20 divided by 237.9g CoCl2 x 6 H20, one gets a theoretical yield of 0.017 mol CoCl2 x 6 H20. After conducting all of the experiments, one concludes that the molecular formula of the complex leuto is [Co(NH3)6]Cl3. Since there is a 1:1 molar ratio of CoCl2 x 6 H20 to the leuto complex, or Co+2 to Co+3 , one can see that the moles of CoCl2 x 6 H20 multiplied by 267.35g of leuto complex divided by 1 mol of leuto complex = 4.45g of complex.
Calculation of Percent Yield Thus, theoretical yield= 4.45g leuto complex. After synthesizing the compound, the researcher got the actual yield to be 2.90g. To get percent yield, divide actual yield over theoretical yield and multiply by 100. Thus, actual yield of leuto complex= 65.12%.

Possible Sources of Error: Lack of temperature maintenance at 60 degrees C. Funnel getting stuck while filtering product. Product getting stuck to the sides of the funnel and not coming off into the watch glass. Plus or minus error on the glassware.
