RN 103 - Vedas 25/01/2008 09:54:00 Brahmana – ritual manual in Vedas Brahman/Brahmin – class of people who specialize in ritual and knowledge of  Vedas Brahman  ultimate reality Brahma – a creator god usually seen with Vishnu Vedas – come from Sanskrit verb vid (to know, knowledge) Post Indus Valley, Indo-Iranians came in, developed Indo-Aryan civilization Vedas central to their religion Vedas are shruti – “What is heard” Not composed by humans, exist eternally as sound Aural component key Sacred speech and sound Hymns of Vedas (and words) also mantras (repeated words or phrases) Ritually effective speech, speech that can change reality through its sacred  quality Ex: a mantra that could bring rain, compelling The key in which you sing it is just as important as the words that are being  sung 4 Vedas –
