Andrew Ludwig Kara Pierce Section: 20 Post Civil War America yielded not only a once again unified country, but a radical change in the status of African Americans. The war ended African American slavery; the amended constitution was the only place to find this freedom however. In everyday life the African American faced threats and fear of lynching. They were constantly tagged as uncivilized by whites, despite the great achievements blacks made. The exclusion of blacks from the 1893 World’s Fair provided a spark for change as well as a means for influential blacks, such as Ida B. Wells, Fredrick Douglas, and Irvine Garland Penn, to prove to the world, and their own country that their race was indeed civilized on the same level as whites, had made many great advancements, and to achieve political justice. Ida B. Wells was a prominent African American who sought political justice in America. To achieve her means Wells proposed a pamphlet, directed to guests of the world fair, which showed blacks’ current situation of persecution. In the pamphlet, Wells questioned how a civilized America allowed three hundred human beings to be burned to death as part of law. 1 Worse yet, the vast majority of these murders are done by mask less mobs in the broad daylight against innocent blacks because the mob wished not to waste time determining their guilt. 2 No political justice was given to Africans at the time either. The juries that investigated lynching were made of members of the mob of murderers,
