LatinAmericanRevolutionsMini-QHookExercise:RankingSocialGroupsDirections:Bythelate18thcentury,arigidsocialhierarchyexistedincolonialLatinAmerica.Certaingroupshadmolepowerandprivilegethanothers,andtherewaslittleroomfor socialadvancement.Beloware descriptionsofthemainsocialclassesthatmadeupcolonialSpanishAmerica.Withapartner,readthroughthedescriptionsandthenfillinthecirclediagramandsocialpyramidbelow.eMestizoswerepeopleofmixedSpanishandIndianheritagewhoin1800madeupabout7%ofthetotalpopulation.Mostmestizosweresmallfarmers,shopkeepers,artisans,andoverseersinminesandonhaciendas(ranchesandplantations).oPeninsulareswerepeopleborninSpainwhomigratedtothecolonies.Peninsularesmadeuplessthan1%ofthecolonialpopulation.Somepeninsularcswereverywealthy,butnotall.Peninsularcsworkedinhigh-rankingjobsinthegovernment,militaryandchurch.oIndianpeoplesmadeupwellover50%ofthepopulationofcolonialLatinAmcrica.ThesewerethepeoplewholivedinLatinAmericabeforethearrivaloftheSpanish.Bylaw,NativevillageswereforcedtoprovidelaborinSpanishminesandfarms.SlaveswereofAfricandescent,andmanywereborninAfrica.Slaveswereabout11%ofthepopu-lation.Undercoloniallaw, slaveswereconsideredpropertyandcouldbeboughtandsold.oMulattosandFreeBlacks:MulattoswerepeopleofmixedAfricanandSpanishblood.MoresothaninNorthAmerica,blacksinSpanishAmericawereabletobuytheirfreedom.Together,freeblacksandmulattosmadeupabout8%ofthepopulation.oCreoleswercpeopleofpureSpanishbloodwhowereborninAmerica.Theirancestrywentbacktotheoriginalconquistadores--somethingtheywereveryproudof.
