Tolsma 1Casey TolsmaSerflingComposition 12/8/2021The Real Meaning of AdsBright colors and big letters consume you as you look at a visual appealing vitamin C adfrom December 2019. The burst of color takes up an entire page in a women’sHealthmagazine. At first glance, you see a distorted man surrounded by the color blue and “EMERGEFORTIFIED” in big letters mixed into the blue. However, when you take a closer look, you canmake out that the man, who some would categorize as attractive, is powerfully emerging fromblue smoke with a bright, contagious smile. Behind the blue smoke, you can see trees, withyellow leaves falling onto the road the man is walking on. The colorful falling leaves and the factthat the man has a coat on, indicates that is autumn. The man also appears to be happy andfeeling good. He has a basic business casual outfit on, and he is confidently walking down astreet. On the upper right corner is the logo for “Emergen-C.” The logo is written in white letterssurrounded by a yellow serrated background. It also has an orange border around the yellowbackground. On the bottom left corner of the ad sits a clear glass of light orange liquid, with abox of Emergen-C in front of it. Beside this image, the ad contains a bolded heading that reads“EMERGEN-C IMMUNE+.” Under the bolded heading you can see three bulleted points thattalk about the benefits of Emergen-C. Finally, a line at the very bottom of the page reads “Whynot feel this good every day? EMERGE AND SEE.”

Behind him, you can hardly see avisible background, other than some trees, a paved road, and part of a couple structures. Thefocus is especially on the man’s face and style. As I previously mentioned, his face has a smileupon it, and he is radiating confidence. This successfully supports the claim that Emergen-Cmakes you feel good.A great deal of ideas can be taken away from this particular advertisement. First of all,the language is very standard. It has a majority of fragments, rather than sentences. The diction isessentially spare. This is logical because when you are looking through a magazine, you don’ttypically stop at an ad. In other words, reading fragments is faster than stopping to read actualsentences. The fragments are mostly declarative, consisting of statements and information. Three
