Cerberus The Glory of Hera (Herakles) • Child of Alcmene and Zeus; - son of Alcmene - not the son of Hera - Zeus comes to Alcmene in the form of her husband - Amphitryon - Zeus makes the night longer - so he can have her over and over - Zeus leaves afterwards • Iphicles- son of Alcmene and Amphitryon - real Amphitryon comes home - go to the bedroom… - 2 sons born - Herakles son of Zeus - Iphicles son of Amphitryon • Threatened infancy - Amphitryon figures out that Zeus came to Alcmene - Amphitryon wants to find out which son is his and which is Zeus’ - Amphitryon puts snakes into Herakles’ crib… - Herakles is able to strangle the snakes - (threatened infancy)

• Education of Herakles, murder of Linos - Amphitryon makes sure Herakles has a good education - archery - Autolokus teaches Herakles how to wrestle - Linos hired to teach Herakles how to play the lyre - (lyre music associated with Apollo) (harp music) - doesn’t turn out too well Herakles has trouble learning the lyre - Linos gets frustrated with Herakles hits him on the head - Herakles freaks out and kills Linos • Herdsman, lion of Cithairon, daughters of Thespios - Amphitryon decides that Herakles might be too rough for education… - decides he should be a herdsman - Lion of Cithairon problem for the heards - Herakles able to kill the lion - lion skin that Herakles wears - Thespios rich man… impressed that Herakles killed the lion - wants Herakles to sleep with ALL of his daughters - …he has 50 fucking daughters - invites Herakles over to his house - stays for 50 nights each night he sleeps with a different daughter - also said that he slept with all 50 in one night… • The Minyan tribute collectors - “here to collect a tribute from Thebes” - Herakles cuts off their ears and their noses - strings them around their neck like a necklace - Minyans upset with this attack Thebes - Herakles leads the fight defeats them • Megara and madness - King of Thebes impressed with this - marries him to his daughter, Megara - marriage does not work out - Megara drives him crazy kills his children - Herakles has blood guilt Labors (athloi) • Pythia at Delphi: Name, 10 labors, immortality - goes to Delphi to the famous shrine of Apollo - consults the Pythia at Apollo - asks how he can get rid of his blood guilt - Pythia says he must do 10 labors

- gives him name “Herakles” - name means “glory of Hera” - labors will also give him immortality - trebling name, labors, immortality • Assigned by Eurystheus - Eurystheus - Zeus and Hera drinking their nectar (intoxicating) - Zeus im feeling so happy… a son of mine will be born and become king - Hera prevented the birth of Herakles - sped up Eurystheus’ birth
