POL103 Notes 4/1/08 Terrorism -Poverty does not determine terrorist status -Truer, however, is that unintegrated people (unemployed/marginized/outliers) are more prone to terrorism -Terrorists tend to have no friends Political Challenge -Are countries with Muslim majorities systematically less democratic? -The 2 countries with the largest Muslim populations (Indonesia and India) are democracies. -These two countries are the outliers of the rest of the data; most people argue that it is generally accepted that Muslim countries are less “free”, less democratic, lower income, slightly more diverse. -Diversity is expensive: costs that go to easing ethnic and race relations could be better spent on democratic fronts -Former British colonies tend to have the best circumstances that lead to democracy -Having been a communist society prevents a stable and consolidated society; secret police, other communist institutions are seen as frightening to the public -Oil production is seen statistically as being uniquely bad for democracy (21% of Muslim
