January 24, 2008 RELIGION OF PURITANISM I. Importance of Religion/Puritanism for American culture – at the beginning, religion was the dominant issue in American culture. The puritans are not the heroes that people once thought they were. The language of the Bible was the uniting language for all the classes in New England. For example, Thomas Paine’s Common Sense was by all, because he used the common language of the Bible (even though Paine is a huge atheist). a. Criticism of Puritan Behavior b. Recognition of long-term impact II. Puritan Religion a. Type of Protestantism – Puritanism comes out of the Reform Tradition that come out of Germany and Switzerland. The Reform Tradition had a strong impact. The leader was a man named John Calvin. i. John Calvin – was from Geneva ii. “Augustinian strain of piety” – St. Augustine lived a wild life but changed and went through a conversion. He came to say that nothing in the world was more important than the spiritual side. 1. Everything secondary to spiritual life – politics, wife, family, even life, meant nothing compared to religious life. The attempt to reach salvation impacted everything else they did. They had to live the life of the world and the life of the spirit at the same time, but it is very clear that the life of the spirit was much more important to them. This was the type of person that England did not want. These people were scary because they were fanatics and completely devoted to their faith. III. English History and Search for Stability – in the middle of the 15 th century, the Royal family split into the Lancasters and the Yorks. Until about 1700, there was constant turmoil in England. No one was in charge, except for a small time when the Puritans had come to fruition and then were kicked out. a.
