BIO 203 Lecture 7 February 13, 2007 ICF and ECF ECF – interstitial and plasma About 62% is intracellular, 30% is interstitial Electrolytes are charged particles that are dissolved in body fluids Cations - Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ Anions - Cl-, HCO3-, HPO4-2, SO4-2, organic acids and proteins Major cations in ECF (plasma): Na+, small calcium and small mg, K Major anions in ECF: Cl- Major cations in ICF: K+, Mg2+ next Major anion in ICF: phosphate HPO4-2 Interstitial space contains little or no protein Balance of charge, charges are not equal, more positive charges than negative With the exception of a higher protein concentration, ICF and ECF have relatively equilibrium state of ions Equilibria – extracellular and intracellular compartments are in osmotic equilibrium, however in chemical disequilibrium. Phospholipid bilayer membrane is a physical barrier that this chemical disequilibrium exists, won’t let through gases, steroid hormones.
