Kory Knaster Chem 104- 042L Experiment 8- Gas Laws and Volatile Liquids Purpose- To determine the mass and volume of a vaporized liquid at a known temperature and pressure, and use the Ideal Gas Law to calculate the molar mass. To do this you will evaporate a volatile liquid in a flask of known volume, condense the liquid by cooling, and then measure the mass of the cooled liquid. Procedure- Obtain a 125 mL Florence Flask and a square of aluminum foil from the cart Use the squeeze bottle in the hood to squirt a small amount of acetone around the inside of the flask, swirl it around, and dispose of it in the organic waste container Weigh the flask and aluminum foil and record weight Obtain a jar of unknown volatile liquid from the fume hood and place about 2 mL in flask Cover top securely with aluminum foil Using clamps, support rod, tripod, gauze, and a 600 mL beaker, set up the apparatus shown in book Fill the beaker with hot tap water and add a couple of boiling stones
