Although at the beginning of the story, Bilbo is an unlikely candidate as a protagonist or any kind of hero, he changes throughout the story and builds significant self- confidence. However this ever growing self-confidence does not make Bilbo any less humble. Bilbo is a shy, timid, yet likeable character from the beginning of the story, and he remains in our favor for the book’s entirety. Rather than becoming less humble, Bilbo’s humility increases throughout the book. To begin, Bilbo is a quiet and content little hobbit, who is most likely a humble creature. He reluctantly accepts to participate in the journey, but his agreement marks the beginning of his transformation. Throughout the journey, Bilbo is put into situations that require him to step outside of his comfort zone, become brave, and stand up against danger or evil. By accomplishing these challenging tasks, Bilbo gains the self-confidence that he never really had before. However, oftentimes when Bilbo overcomes a challenge he displays his personal humility rather than boasting or taking any real credit. For
