Jason Miller The Beginning Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991 Dave wanted to record his written music and put it on a tape but did not just want to play with his guitar so he found a few other people to help him with that Band members: Dave Matthews, Carter Beauford, Leroi Moore, Stefan Lessard, Boyd Tinsley, and Butch Taylor Dave Matthews Position: Lead Singer and Guitarist Originally picked up a guitar at age 9 Met some of the members when he was a bartender in a local Jazz club after one of his friends made him get up on stage and perform one night He had originally pictured someone else singing his songs but after writing a few he decided otherwise Carter Beauford Position: Drums Exposed to music at a very young age after going to concerts (Buddy Rich) First professional gig at nine Met Dave through the club that he had worked at. Known for mixing together countless styles of percussion. Leroi Moore Position: Saxophonist and vocalist Mom introduced him to music by playing hymns Started playing saxophone in junior high and studied it in college Has Very bad stage fright Performed around Virginia and that's how Dave and him met Carries around eleven instruments on tour including bass, baritone, tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones, flute, bass clarinet, and wood penny whistle Stefan Lessard Position: Bass player Musical parents Started playing with DMB when he was just 16 after being recommended by one of his teachers
Virtuoso on the Bass upright and electric Dropped out of school to tour with the band Added the youthfulness to the band and showed them musical experiences they probably otherwise would not have encountered. Boyd Tinsley Position: Violinist and vocals Grew up in a very musical family Learned how to play the violin by accident after signing up for the wrong instrument When a teenager he took part in forming a youth orchestra Was asked to move to Baltimore to become a virtuoso when he was 16 but declined because he did not want the commitment it would take Asked by Dave to play on a demo tape in 1991 and joined fulltime in 1992 Butch Taylor Position: Keyboardist, Writer, Composer Not really a member but has been with them since 1998 and acts like their sixth member Has taken part in both studio and live performances Got involved with the band through Leroi because the went to James Madison University together Albums November 9, 1993- Remember Two Things - certified gold by the RIAA 1994- Recently September 27, 1994- Table and Dreaming -certifies 4 times platinum by the RIAA April 30, 1996-Crash - number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart October 28, 1997- Live at Red Rocks 8-15-95 double disc- debuted number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and certified platinum April 28, 1998 Before These Crowded Streets debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chartstrongest debut to that date January 19, 1999- Live at Luther College acoustic performance by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynoldsnumber 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and certified platinum November 23, 1999- Listener Supported certified double platinum February 27,2001- Everyday triple platinum October 23, 2001- Live at Chicago, 12-19-98 featured guest musician Tim Reynolds July 16, 2002 Busted Stuff first album without musical guests Summer 2002- Live at Folsom Field, Boulder, CO Summer/Fall 2003 DMB's first solo albums- Boyd's True Reflections and Dave's Some Devil Fall 2004 DMB Live Trax 2004- The Gorge combination 2-CD's/ 1 DVD 2005- Standup and Weekend on the Rocks Crash Into Me Tours and Gigs May 11, 1991-private rooftop party in Charlottesville September 1994- first official national tour-lasted over a year and sold out tickets across the country Winter of '96, '97, and '99 Dave Matthews toured for the acoustic duo album All of 2000 on tour and summer of 2001 and 2002 Short tour in December of 2002 in just the U. S. Summer 2003 tour culminated with a performance in front of an estimated crowd of in excess of 100,000 fans In December 2003 toured to promote the solo albums Misc. DMB is considered to be rock, alternative, or jazz rock Most common topics of his songs were women, drugs, live life to the fullest, and political messages The DMB album "under the Table and Dreaming is dedicated to Dave's sister that died in 1993 The band lets their fans record their live shows Nominated for 12 Grammy's but only won 1 Won 5 VH1 Awards and NAACP Image Awards Trivia Julia Roberts is a huge fan and appears in one of their videos ("Dream Girl") The bands longest performance was 32 minutes and 3 seconds Dave Matthews Band rarely gives concerts outside of the U. S. and Canada Resources
