What makes moral statements true? o True or False? Its raining in CP. T if it is, F if it isn’t o You must drive on the right side of the road. T in our society F in some others o Etc etc o “torturing babies for fun is wrong” T if ______ , F if ______? Objectivism – some fact or property “out there” in our world is what makes moral  statements true or false, just like grass being green makes the statement true. So, the  statement about babies is true if there’s some property stating that its wrong (eg it fails  the Categorical Imperative, or that it doesn’t produce the greatest pleasure for the  greatest number.  Subjectivism – My personal beliefs or feelings are what make moral statements true.  Thus, the babies’ statement is true for me if I believe in it, but false if I don’t. For  subjectivists, morality is
