Violation of a social norm o What behaviors are acceptable and nonacceptable o Can regulate very minor behavior to very serious behavior o Even the norms that regulate minor behaviors they are still very serious o elevator etiquette o Norms are about expected behavior Folkways Laws Mores- moor-ray- these are more serious norms (morals)- be a good person- dont lie, dont cheat- be a good wife Govern what we eat or what we dont eat. o i.e. cats and dogs in Asia would be repulsive in America we have norms in place that says that in some condition taking some ones life is ok. o Warfare o Self- defense o Capital punishment Other countries see our capital punishment as barbaric o Abortion o Euthanasia Taboos- special type of mores The most serious These are the things that we hold more dearly to be right or wrong and even talking about it makes us uncomfortable o Incest- illustrates the importance of looking from within the culture Every place says its wrong, but they dont always have the same rules about it Some say only the family members on the mothers side. Others the fathers side o Theres a reason usually goes down to where the money comes Close family out to first cousin supposedly if you do it then your children will come out deformed. Yes its an elevated risk but its very small risk It makes it difficult to determine inheritance lineage o Norms vary from place to place- even from situation to situation They are culturally specific- Even so there are some situations that can make the norm change o Alive- they had to eat the flesh of the deceased even with this norms arose about eating the flesh Change over time Drinking- prohibition- at one time the govt. tried to outlaw liquor; now its ok to drink in moderation A violation of a social norm but elicits a negative reaction o Sanctions Negative sanctions- Formal o Jail time o Citations Informal o Whippings o Scowling Positive sanctions o Reward o Award o Good grades o Smiles Differentness does not define deviance o Driving a Lamborghini is not Just because a lot of people do it doesnt make it not deviant o Believing in UFO is deviant behavior- half of adults do believe in UFO Harm o doesnt make it deviant Tylenol Water case- water intoxification Cigarettes Positivist Constructionist Absolutism Relativism Determinism Voluntarism Objectivism subjectivism Absolutism- deviance is real; if deviance is real that means it is different from conventional behavior which means it has its own set of...
