But what does it mean when the narrator is unreliable? Authors may have several motives for creating an unreliable character to tell their story. One example is a novel by Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time . This novel is narrated by Christopher John Francis Boone, an autistic 15-year-old who is characterized by his inability to understand the thoughts and feelings of others. Haddon chose to make Christopher an unreliable narrator in order to take readers inside the mind of a person with autism and help them understand what life is like with autism, making the novel an important piece of literature. An argument can be made that Christopher is not an unreliable narrator because he can describe his experiences and the things around him in perfect detail. However, he lacks the
