GORGIAS (aristocratic not allegoric) There are one of three possible ways to receive happiness (1) God, (2) nature, and (3) pure luck. (1) is not true, (2) nature only gives us the capacity/potential to receive happiness, (3) is too simple When judging if overall view of an individual’s life was happy there are certain criteria to be fulfilled. 1. Happiness is the expression of the soul (psychology/ minds) in considered actions. There are two parts to the soul, non-rational and rational. Non-Rational Nutritive Animal Rational Completely/ultra rational Not-so-much rational Virtue- lies in a mean (relative to us) between excess and deficiency as determined by reason Sphere of action of feeling Excess Mean Deficiency Fear and Confidence Rashness Courage Cowardice Pleasure and Pain Licentiousness Temperance Insensibility Getting and Spending (minor) Prodigality Liberality Illiberality Getting and Spending (major) Vulgarity Magnificence Pettiness Honor and Dishonor (minor)
