Chicano/a Studies 1c Culture vs. culture 4/3/08 1. Not much contact between cultures Spaniards started exploring by staying in Cuba the sending groups to explore the mainland. In 1519 Gonzalo Guerrero and Geronimo Aguilar (last two members left from ship from Spain – wrecked) they became slaves to the Mayans – Guerrero became invested in the family he worked for – gets out of slavery – marries and becomes part of community Hernand Cortez comes to save them – Aguilar wants to leave with him, Guerrero wants to stay in his newly adapted culture – he became a part of the community – became one of the most tenacious fighters against the Spaniards when they came. Culture was much more about genealogy than class (Guerrero married into a good family) 2. Mayans against Aristotle – caste system Juan Gines de Sepulveda and De las Casas meet Aristotle says adult male is at the top of everything because they have reason –
