is "a finite amount of land on the planet - 28 billion acres of biologically productive land and sea. Dividing that
finite acreage by 6.5 billion humans, each of us has a theoretical right to about 4.3 acres ((Wann 2007), p. 23)."
This brings us to the concept of the ecological footprint (EF), the amount of land required to provide the
resources used, and absorb the waste produced, by an individual or organization. The EF measures how much
of earth’s resources each person consumes and how much of an impact each individual has on the
environment. The EF represents the human burden on the environment, the total impact of humanity on
nature. It is the "sum of all effects of resource extraction, pollution emission, energy use, biodiversity
destruction, urbanization, and the other consequences of physical growth (Meadows, Randers et al. 2004)." EF
calculations vary; most attempt to estimate the area of earth and sea required to support an individual’s
lifestyle by regenerating renewable resources and absorbing wastes....
