Egypt has been inhabited by humans since the Paleolithic era. Historically religion in the region has long flourished, fallen, and flourished again. However in 1 st century AD many cults and churches arose, each struggling for power. Ancient texts uncover that amazing machines were used in temples to create illusion and magic to attract worshippers. The machines required sophisticated engineering techniques from some of the greatest minds of the time. In this brief research paper discussing Engineering Temple Magic in Egypt which I have prepared for Professor Williams’ 2007 World Civilization class, I will compare text and on-line sources that I have consulted. Magic in ancient Egypt was referred as one of the “priestly sciences” 1 . Priests often wished to maintain or enhance their position or power within the land and they did anything to achieve that. Many priests believed that appropriate knowledge of magic lead to power. Creating powerful and awe-inspiring illusions manipulated and enthralled worshippers. “The scope of magic and the number of its techniques were practically unlimited” 2 . They would eventually turn to mathematicians and engineers like Ctesibius and Heron of Alexandria to create intricate and elaborate machines.
