Gina SchollSociology 1100-NET06Sci-Fi Essay #3GattacaIn the movie Gattaca, the society is highly stratified. Social stratificationis present when they tried to eliminate the different “classes” of people by making humans genetically engineered, but ended up creating a bigger social stratificationbecause there were families who refused to have their children be “genetically engineered” and wanted them to be “natural.” Altering DNA can have negative effects, such as genocide. Gattaca is a caste system. Your future is determined at birth based on their parent’s ascribedcharacteristics. Vincent is born into this caste systembecause his parents did not choose his “genetic makeup.” DNA plays the primary role in determining what “class” you fit in to. The genetically engineered group is considered to be the “ruling class” or “upper class” and those that have DNA that isn’t genetically engineered are the lower middle class.
