TISSUE’ENGINEERING’ Tissue’Engineering’(TE)’can’be’defned’as’“the’applicaHon’oF’principles’and’ methods’oF’engineering’and’liFe’sciences’towards’the’Fundamental’ understanding’oF’structure-FuncHon’relaHonships’in’normal’and’pathological’ mammalian’Hssue’and’the’development’oF’biological’subsHtutes’that’restore,’ maintain,’or’improve’Hssue’FuncHon”’[9,37].’ The’dominant’method’oF’Tissue’Engineering’involves’growing’the’relevant’cells’in’ vitro’into’a’sca±old’(that’is’supposed’to’mimic’the’FuncHon’oF’the’natural’ extracellular’matrix)’[2].’ ’Bone’Hssue’engineering,’provides’a’prospecHve’soluHon’to’regenerate’bone’in’a’ reliable,’economical’and’physiologically’acceptable’manner’and’has’emerged’as’ an’alternaHve’to’bone-gra²ing’procedures’and’bone’Hssue’subsHtute’ biomaterials’[9,39].’

EXTRACELLULAR’MATRIX’ Mammalian’Hssue’is’composed’of’two’major’components:’cells’(both’ parenchymal’and’ mesenchymal)’and’extracellular’matrix’(ECM)’[46].’ A’large’majority’of’the’Hssue’volume’is’composed’of’the’ECM’component,’which’ also’provides’much’of’a’Hssue±s’geometric’shape’[46].’ The’ECM’is’a’complex’arrangement’of’proteins’and’polysaccharides’such’as’ collagen,’hyaluronic’acid,’proteoglycans,’ glycosaminoglycans,’and’elasHn’[46].’ These’ECM’components’are’constantly’being’synthesized,’secreted,’oriented,’ and’modiFed’by’the’cellular’components’that’they’support’[46].’
