Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time EssayChange is vital in character development as it shows how the character evolves after several stages. In The Curious Incident of the Dog In The Night-Time by Mark Haddon, Christopher is a modern day hero because he overcomes obstacles to achieve his goals and grow as a person. He is brave, anti-social, and determined, all character traits that take him on the hero’s journey. His character traits slowly help him to achieve what he desires and show him that he can do anything. Firstly, Christopher shows bravery throughout his journey as he grows to break out of his shell. One way he does this is by demonstrating bravery. When he finds Wellington, Mrs. Shears dog, dead on the grass he does not react in an immature manner. While the police investigate the scene, Christopher states, “The policeman squatted beside me and said, ‘would you like to tell me what’s going on here young man?’ I sat up and said, ‘the dog is dead.’” Despite the chaotic situation, Christopher stays calm and collected. This demonstrates that he is comfortable around the police and therefore gives direct answers to them. Additionally, when Christopher finds out that his father had killed Wellington, he makes the decision of living with his mother in London, England. He uses the local train and shows bravery as he is on his own and has never been alone in a busy area such as a train station. While boarding the train he says, “And then I went up to the door and the doors slid open…and I was on the train to London.” Christopher is unaware of the hasty decision he is making, but his bravery pulls him through to get to his destination. This portrays that Christopher, the boy who always wants to sit in his room and be alone, is now able to be amongst others. After the point where he reaches his destination, he understands his capability of being brave as he shows this through his journey.
