EDST 581 QRQ4 Yueli Wang “In an argument that might be challenged by people who believe that poverty is caused by economic conditions, Hirsch states that poverty is caused by the lack of proper cultural literacy.” (Spring, 2008) 5,000 names, phases, dates and concepts only offer the poor a chance to glance at the culture of the rich. Poverty is not caused by the lack of cultural literacy, but by the scarcity of social sources. My argument here is not to demonstrate the reasons of poverty, which might be quite complex. I believe the “culture”, which Hirsch refers to here, is the culture of the rich. The culture is the unwritten rules, the knowledge, the habits and the common belief among rich people, rather than the reason how these people become rich. No doubt, the book Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know will never help the poor get rid of their predicament. Multiculturalism is the reality rather than a choice for any country in the world today.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
