Andrew Baran Henriette Recny Assignment Two 2/11/2008 ...Always an Immigrant, Never a Migrant… After reading and analyzing Lorna Goodison’s, “I Am Becoming My Mother,” it depicted Caribbean women as hardworking women, “. ..fingers smelling always of onions,” and “. ..my mother raises rare blooms and waters them with tea.” This makes the reader realize labor plays an extreme role in the lives of these women. This is also seen in Jamaica Kincaid’s, “Girl,” which is a fantastic piece of writing that shows that women play a key role in making sure that many tasks are done either around the house or for the man in their life, if they have one because seventy-percent of families in the Caribbean are one single-parent homes, but also have a certain way that they should be carrying themselves around other people in their town. For instance, “. ..this is how you sweep the corner; this is how you sweep the whole house; this is how you sweep a yard. ..” is a prime example at how even from a young age, Caribbean women make sure that they teach their daughters how to perform chores in or around the house. “. ..this is how you iron your father’s khaki shirt so that it doesn’t have a crease; this is how you iron your father’s khaki pants so that they don’t have a crease” shows how women are usually looked down upon from a man’s perspective because they feel that the woman should tend to their needs as they go out and provide for the family. Also, in this piece of writing it provides the reader with a sense of how Caribbean women should carry themselves out in public, “. ..don’t sing benna on Sundays at all and never in Sunday school; this is how to smile to someone you don’t like at all; this is how you set a table for tea. ..” Although during the end of the writing she mentions
