THINK ABOUT IT The list of the top 100 movies of all time is released periodically, but rarely is any attempt made to convert the gross receipts of each movie into today’s dollars. Why do you suppose they aren’t compared in terms of today’s dollars? Now take the noninstitutional adult civilian population and divide it into two groups: persons not in the labor force and persons in the civilian labor force. The persons not in the labor force are those who are neither working nor looking for work. Retired persons fall into this category, as do those engaged in homemaking in their own homes and persons who choose not to work. Finally, persons in the civilian labor force can be divided into two groups: they are either employed or unemployed.
