PROFESSIONAL EDUCATIONFocus:Assessment and Evaluation of LearningCompetencies:Applyprinciplesinconstructingandinterpretingalternative/authentic forms of high-qualityassessment.BASIC CONCEPTSTest- An instrument designed to measure anycharacteristic, quality, ability, knowledge orskill. It comprised of items in the area it isdesigned to measure.Measurement -A process of quantifying thedegree to which someone/something possessesa given trait. i.e. quality, characteristics, orfeature.Assessment- A process of gathering andorganizing quantitative or qualitative data intoan interpretable form to have a basis forjudgment or decision- making.- It is a prerequisite to evaluation. It providesthe information which enables evaluation totake place.Evaluation- A process of systematicinterpretation, analysis, appraisal or judgmentof the worth of organized data as basis fordecision-making. It involves judgment about thedesirability of changes in students.Traditional Assessment- It refers to the useof pen-and-paper objective test.Alternative Assessments- It refers to the useof methods other than pen- and-paper objectivetest which includes performance test, projects,portfolios, journals, and the likes.Authentic Assessment- It refers to the use ofassessment methods that simulate true-to-lifesituations. This could be objective tests thatreflect real life situations or alternative methodsthat are parallel to what we experience in reallife.PURPOSES OF CLASSROOM ASSESSMENT1. Assessment FOR Learning- this includesthree types of assessment done before andduring instruction. These are placement,formative and diagnostic.Placement- done prior to instructionIts purpose is to assess the needs of thelearners to have basis in planning for a relevantinstruction.Teachers use this assessment to know whattheir students are bringing into the learningsituations and use this as a starting point forinstruction.The results of this assessment place student inspecific learning groups to facilitate teachingand learning.Formative– done during instructionIt is this assessment where teacherscontinuously monitor the students’ level ofattainment of the learning objectives (Stiggins,2005)Theresultsofthisassessmentarecommunicated clearly and promptly to thestudents for them to know their strengths andweaknesses and the progress of their learning.Diagnostic– done during instructionThis is used to determine students’ recurring orpersistent difficulties.It searches for the underlying causes ofstudent’s learning problems that do not respondto first aid treatment.It helps formulate a plan for detailed remedialinstruction.2. Assessment OF Learning- this is doneafter instruction. This is usually referred to asthe summative assessment.
