Zach Frank Midterm #1 The One’s That Left Their Societies Throughout the novels and short stories that we have read, we have come across characters that have picked up and left their particular societies. The first of the three stories where this occurred was in the short story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. The city of Omelas is described as “a city in a fairy tale” where the people are always happy and full of joy. Although it is described as a perfect city, there are those who choose to leave the city and never return. The reason for this is because alone and isolated in an underground cellar is a child living in the worst conditions possible, suffering and living in misery for the rest of the citizens to live in happiness. After seeing this one innocent child suffer for the happiness of thousands, some choose to walk away from the city of Omelas feeling sick and disgusted. They walk into the darkness not knowing where they are going, but to them anything is better.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
