Discussion Assignment #11 Due: Monday, October 29th @9:00am 1. What contrasts were evident among the four major party Presidential candidates in 2011? (a) Goodluck Jonathan (PDP) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12192152 President Goodluck Jonathan stepped forward in 2010 when President Umaru Yar’Adua died. After months of political wrangling, Nigeria’s elite finally accepted him as acting leader. The huge margin of his victory at the PDP primaries, with several central and northern states backing him up, proves his political acumen and the relative smoothness of his assumption of power. His strong rule defied the People’s Democratic Party’s tradition of alternating presidential power between north and south after two terms in office by winning the part’s primaries. There have been fair shares of controversies with his rise to power. Some of the reasons were because Mr. Jonathan was remembered as vice-president for his negotiations with militants in the Niger Delta, who are mostly his fellow Ijaaws. Many of the major militant groups have laid down their weapons as a part of a government amnesty. His presidency is more so remembered for the Independence Day bombings last October. A militant faction is also responsible for its upsurge of violence in the Niger Delta. However, after clearly securing a first-round election victory. Jonathan now has plenty of time to make a real mark on Nigerian politics. (b) Muhammadu Buhari (CPC) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12890807 Muhammadu Buhari is a former military ruler who lost the last two elections and is running for a third time with hope that dissatisfied members from the northern hierarchy of PDP will shift their loyalty to him. He failed to secure support among the Christians in the south and the poor among the north. This then proved to be a problem for him in the 2003 polls where he was viewed with suspicion. Buhari then mounted his assault on the presidency with the newly formed party, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). There have been many mixed feelings towards his position as president because of the many ups and downs during presidency. In the end, Buhari retains a rare reputation for honesty among Nigeria’s politicians, military, and civilians because of his campaign.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
