Amanda Lynch King Lear Journal Entry 1 King Lear Acts 2 and 3 Reading Act 2 again in the beginning just pointed out once again to me how paralleled the 2 stories in the play are. Like for example, in the beginning of Act 2 when Gloucester listens to Edmund and thinks that Edgar is bad, it is paralleling when Lear things that Cordelia is bad. However, I was sure that Lear was somewhat of an idiot, because of how he is just kind of falling into the traps of his terrible older daughters, it was said in class that that was wrong and that he wasn’t an idiot. I can’t help thinking that he still is one, though. Now reading this again, I realize that I am not too sure why in Act 2 Scene 2, Kent gives Oswald all of that trouble. However I think that it is trying to protect or defend Lear? That is the only thing that I can think of, because now that I’m reading it again I really can’t find any explanation.. either that or maybe Kent really just hates the guy, because Oswald is one of the mean guys in the play. I think that is one thing about reading Shakespeare that gives me problems. A lot of times, it will not tell you why something is happening, and you just have to figure it out yourself, and use references from before, but I am kind of bad at that because a lot of the times I cannot even understand what happened before so that definitely makes it harder for me to incorporate that into later parts in the text. Another thing that I am getting from reading this act over again is just realizing more how I don’t like the 2 daughters that are taking advantage of Lear. I cannot even imagine the betrayal that Lear is feeling from his daughters, and I just wish that he would have realized that he had the wrong idea about them before, and then I feel like he wouldn’t be getting slapped in the face so hard now. I feel like the girls think that they can basically boss Lear around now just
because he is getting older, and he definitely does not have as much power anymore. I think this is another thing that is starting to get to Lear- realizing that he is no longer powerful. I think that that is definitely something that he is going to have to get used to. I also think that one of the reasons that he wants to bring his knights with him is to make him keep his power alive. I was
