The Odyssey Odysseus trying to go home to Ithaca, takes 10 years Leaves Troy with his men and ships (20 ships with 50 men each) 1 st stop – Land of Cicones o Take food and water o Sack city o Stay and relax o Cicones come back and kill some men o Gift: spare life of a priest, get best wind in the world in return 2 nd stop – Land of Lotus-Eaters o Peaceful people; if you eat lotus then you loose all desire/ambition/worries o Some men eat lotus fruit o Manage to drag them onto ship tied up 3 rd stop – Land of the Cyclopes o “cyclopes” = one-eye o Don’t have to farm, they’re sheep and goat herders o Odysseus and some men go to see inhabitants Go into a cave, see lots of food Polyphemus returns to his cave with his sheep and closes cave opening with a boulder Polyphemus eats a few of the men Decides against killing Cyclopes – only one that can move the boulder Gets Polyphemus drunk, says his name is Nobody Sharpen and heat the end of a stick and blind Polyphemus “Nobody! Nobody has put my eye out!” Tie men to underside of sheep, so they can escape when the door opened in the morning Morning, Polyphemus feels sheep on top and eats them out Run back to ship As they sail away Odysseus taunts Polyphemus and says his real name Polyphemus calls upon his father – Poseidon Asks for Odysseus to be delayed from going home Wants him to arrive home alone, as a beggar, only to find home over ridden Boasting = hubris (really, really bad)
