Unformatted text preview: cases show an increase in number of WBC in peripheral smear.  ­ In chronic infection, an increase in number of mature WBC is visible, while in Leukemia number of immature WBCs (ie. 'Blasts') increases in the peripheral blood.  ­ In chronic myelogenous leukemia, the specific example provided, a chromosomal translocation generates a constitutively activated form of the c ­Abl cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase (a signal amplifier). 'Gleevac' is a c ­Abl kinase inhibitor that is thus used to treat the disease. Such 'rational' chemotherapeutic strategies result in a greatly improved quality of life as these drugs are not grossly cytotoxic like most classical chemotherapeutics. Thus, the side effects are considerably reduced.
